Igor Kirilenko is charged with murdering Gregory Ginzburg, a 72-year-old Edison resident at a home on Clive Hills Road.
Police originally responded to a 911 call from Ginzburg who said Kirilenko was in his home with a gun, according to the criminal complaint. During the call, a loud noise, believed to be a gunshot, was heard, authorities said.
Upon arrival, officers observed Kirilenko standing in the kitchen area next to Ginzburg who was laying on the floor, authorities said. As officers were giving Kirilenko verbal commands, they observed him taking out an item believed to be a handgun and throwing it onto the kitchen table, authorities said.
After detaining Kirilenko and escorting him away from the scene, he kicked Ginzburg and stated he wanted to make sure he was dead, authorities said. Ginzburg was found with gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.
A witness said she was in the kitchen area with Ginzbug when Kirilenko entered through the rear door and shot him.
While at the hospital, Kirilenko said, "I hope I killed him," authorities said.
